Talk on Organ Donation and Liver Transplantation

Dr. Supriyo Ghatak, Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology, CK Birla Hospitals CMRI delivered a speech at the Medical College Kolkata (Aesculapia). His speech was about organ donation and liver transplantation.

Few points of his speech are given below.

Organ (Liver) Transplant is the best option for patients suffering from early liver cancer or advanced Cirrhosis caused by diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and NASH, or by over-consumption of Alcohol. During liver transplantation, the diseased liver is removed and replaced by a whole or part new liver. In cadaveric liver transplant procedure, the new liver is taken from an irreversibly brain-dead patient, after getting necessary approvals from the patient’s family as well as government organisations. In the living donor liver transplant procedure, the liver (a portion) is taken from a healthy relative of the patient. Success rates of these procedures vary between 70-90%.

Prevention is the best protection against these life-threatening liver diseases. Some tips include:

  • Vaccination for Hepatitis B (during childhood)
  • Protecting against hepatitis virus transmission by – avoiding usage of shared syringes, avoiding unprotected sex with multiple partners
  • Reducing / controlling weight and keeping blood sugar under control – in case of being diagnosed with either fatty liver disease or diabetes
  • Avoiding processed food
  • Exercising regularly
  • Stopping alcohol intake

Also, it is important to be aware of symptoms of these diseases – typically: jaundice, fatigue, blood vomiting, fluid in the abdomen (ascites) etc. One should always consult a doctor if any of the symptoms are persistent because early detection also allows for a more effective cure.
