In connection with World Cancer Day, a few city-based medical specialists emphasised on the need for creating awareness of the risk factors for cancer. Dr. Sumit Gulati, consultant gastroenterologist talked about the increasing incidence of gastrointestinal cancers which is the second leading cause of death after lung cancer. He explained the importance of a balanced diet and the need for maintaining the correct body weight. Dr. Jyotirup Goswami, consultant radiation oncologist said that cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in females in India. He added that there is no organised cancer screening programme in India and that cervical cancer vaccination is not yet included in the universal immunisation schedule. All the experts stressed on the significance of early detection of cancer to provide more effective treatment.
